The Vatican, Vatican City: In All Its Glory

On our first day in Rome, Mom and I elected to leave Italy, and head to the world's smallest country--Vatican City.  We spent the day exploring, and decided it was worth the 491 steps to climb to the top of da Vinci's dome on St. Peter's Basilica (and we were right).  The view of St. Peter's square and Rome from the cupola was spectacular, as you can see above.

We also thoroughly explored the inside of St. Peter's Basilica.  The world's largest church is truly stunning, a beauty that is only enhanced by the rays of the afternoon sun slanting across the high altar.

Not only did we explore St. Peter's, but we also wandered around the Vatican museums for quite a few hours.  Their collection is remarkable, particularly the rooms by Raphael and Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel.  Pictured above is perhaps the most famous panel from the Sistine Chapel, God giving his Spirit to Adam.  It was beautiful, but on a very high ceiling...good thing Mom brought her binoculars!
